Tragedi di bilik asrama UTM

http://www.hmetro.com.my/Current_News/myMetro/Wednesday/Mutakhir/20090701083020/Article

Ketua Polis Daerah Johor Bahru Utara, Asisten Komisioner Ruslan Hassan, berkata pihaknya menerima maklumat berhubung penemuan mayat wanita berkenaan sebelum bergegas ke tempat kejadian.

Menurutnya, bilik berkenaan disewa wanita terbabit sejak 11 Mei lalu kerana polisi UTM membenarkan orang luar menyewa bilik asrama ketika cuti semester.

Night Market [Bazaar Malam]

Calling myself to share about the night market. It should be a new information for those who just arrived to Malaysia, perhaps.

The night markets are typically from 6 o'clock pm till 10.00 - 10.30 pm. You can get anything from night markets - groceries, clothing, good local food, hot snacks, accessories, bags, CDs, tapes, Videos, household items, fresh produce, the latest fads, etc. All at low prices and you can still bargain for lower prices!
There are morning markets also, but they are are more suitable for getting groceries and fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. We call those markets with fresh seafood "wet markets". These morning markets are from 6 - 9 am in every part of the city.

Night markets or night bazaars are street markets operating at night that are generally dedicated to more leisurely strolling, shopping, and eating than more businesslike day markets. The most well-known night markets are those in Taiwan, but they also exist other areas inhabited by ethnic Chinese such as Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Thailand, and Chinatowns worldwide.

Night markets are commonly known as Pasar Malam by the locals, which literally means night market, "pasar" being related to "bazaar" in Persian. A pasar malam is a street market in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia that opens in the evening, usually in residential neighbourhoods.[1]

It brings together a collection of stalls that usually sell goods such as fruit, vegetables, snacks, toys, clothes, movie discs and ornaments at cheap or at least reasonable prices. A pasar malam often takes place only one to a few days of the week, as the traders rotate around different neighbourhoods on different days of the week. Haggling over prices is a common practice at such markets.

King of Pop dead at around 4pm local time (12.00 GMT)

The sensational, yet tragic life of Michael Jackson, the supremely-gifted pop singer who emerged from childhood stardom to become one of the most influential and infamous celebrities of modern times, was cut short late last night in the chaotic emergency room of a Los Angeles hospital. He was 50.

Doctors pronounced the King of Pop dead at around 4pm local time (12.00 GMT), after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest at his rented chateau-style home in the Holmby Hills area of the city, shortly after mid-day. He had been discovered in a coma when emergency services arrived at the scene. The death of the once-dazzling performer came weeks before he was due to attempt to re-launch his career with a series of 40 comeback concerts in London.

Jackson was reportedly taken ill as he prepared to leave home and drive to Burbank, where he was rehearsing the new show that was to mark his return to the stage for the first time in almost ten years. He was hoping to rehabilitate his reputation following a series of freakish scandals that had left him bankrupt, with his private life and reputation in tatters.

Exact circumstances of the incident were still unclear at time of going to print. However paramedics reported being called to a 7 bedroom, 13 bathroom house on Carolwood Drive, just off Sunset Boulevard, at 12.21pm Los Angeles time. The French-style property, boasted 12 fireplaces and a cinema, and was being rented by Jackson for $100,000 [£60,000] a month.

An ambulance arrived less than five minutes later and discovered the singer unconscious and in full cardiac arrest. Unconfirmed reports said he had been working out in the home's gym with Lou Ferigno, the actor who played the Incredible Hulk and had been helping him get in shape for the forthcoming concerts.

The ambulance was logged leaving the property at 12.32, and doctors performed CPR throughout the 2 mile, six minute journey to UCLA medical centre. However, they were unable to revive him and he never regained consciousness.

Large crowds were gathering outside the hospital last night, with many carrying flowers and banners, and some mourners wearing fancy dress costumes. The sudden news of Jackson's death shocked the world, crashed news websites, and prompted tens of millions of viewers to switch to rolling news channels. At one point, almost a dozen TV helicopters were hovering above the hospital.

Scores of policemen arrived at the scene, and mounted a chaotic effort to secure the building. Family members were on the scene from shortly after Jackson's admission. Joe Jackson, the star's father, told showbiz website TMZ.com, which broke the story, that he had been rushed to hospital that "he is not doing well."

The website later broke the news that the singer had died. TMZ added that his sister LaToya Jackson ran into the hospital sobbing. Also at the venue were Jackson's three children, who he has brought up alone: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, and Prince Michael Jackson II, who is known as "Blanket."

Jackson's death brings a tragic conclusion to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his commercial peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, and dazzled the world with the haunting reach of his possibilities.

In public, he was perhaps the most exciting artist of his generation, known for crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched. His single sequinned glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

In terms of his earnings and fame, he ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. In fact, he united two of contemporary music's biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie.

Yet in private, he became an increasingly tortured soul, who perhaps never recovered from being denied a normal childhood. At the height of his fame, he lived at a bizarre Hearstian theme park called Neverland where he slept in oxygen tents, held hands with a chimpanzee called Bubbles, and (at a time when it didn't have dubious connotation) invited thousands of children to play.

As years went by, he became an increasingly freakish figure – a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grownup life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice. He surrounded himself with children, and became an object of tabloid infamy.

In 2005, he was tried and then cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him. Jackson's financial problems finally caught up with him in November, after four years on the road, living in luxury hotels in Bahrain, Ireland and Germany, mostly at other people's expense, when Neverland went into foreclosure. In a bid to clear his debts, creditors persuaded him to announce a series of 50 concerts at the O2 arena in London, which sold out in hours when tickets went on sale.

The shows were heralded as the first step in an unlikely career renaissance that would ultimately encompass a three-year world tour, a new album, movies, a Graceland-like museum, musical revues in Las Vegas and Macau, and even a "Thriller" casino. It would wipe out his massive debts, estimated at close to $60m, and allow him to retire in comfort.

However cynics always doubted Jackson was physically capable of a comeback, which was originally scheduled for July 8. Attention may now turn to whether it was responsible for the promoters to make Jackson carry out the tour. In May, Randy Phillips, the head of AEG who had promoted the concerts, denied tabloid reports that he was suffering from skin cancer. "He's as healthy as can be; no health problems whatsoever." However days later, AEG was forced to cancel the first four shows of the run, blaming "technical issues." The opening night was moved to July 13.

Quincy Jones, who helped arrange Thriller and produced Off the Wall album, told reporters: "I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."

Bloggers have no right to privacy says British court

The High Court in London has ruled that bloggers have no right to privacy under British law since blogging is essentially a public rather than a private activity. Skip related content

The case was brought by The Times newspaper after it discovered the identity of a blogger in the police service who wrote the popular NightJack web page, which was awarded the Orwell Prize for political writing in April.

The author, Richard Horton, a detective constable with Lancashire Constabulary, had sought an injunction to stop the paper from releasing his name but his application was denied.

It would seem to be quite legitimate for the public to be told who it was who was choosing to make, in some instances quite serious criticisms of police activities and, if it be the case, that frequent infringements of police discipline regulations were taking place, said Mr Justice Eady, The Times reports.

I do not accept that it is part of the courts function to protect police officers who are, or think they may be, acting in breach of police discipline regulations from coming to the attention of their superiors.

The NightJack blog was very popular with the reading public, getting up to half a million hits a week. Horton has now deleted the blog and received a written warning from his superiors.

The case will have a chilling effect on other workplace blogs, since the lack of any expectation of privacy will cause some to abandon their blogs.

Thousands of regular bloggers . . . would be horrified to think that the law would do nothing to protect their anonymity if someone carried out the necessary detective work and sought to unmask them, said Hugh Tomlinson, QC, for Mr Horton.

The police force has supplied a number of authors of popular blogs, so much so that the forces have intro duced guidelines on blogging aimed at limiting what can be said by officers on the beat.

Oral health: Brush up on dental care basics

Oral health begins with clean teeth. Get daily dental care tips, from brushing and flossing to recognizing oral health problems.

By Mayo Clinic staff

Too tired to brush your teeth? Too busy to floss? If you're tempted to skip these daily chores, remember that your smile depends on these simple dental care habits. Know how to promote oral health — and when to report oral health problems to your dentist.

Brushing for oral health

Oral health begins with clean teeth. Consider these brushing basics from the American Dental Association:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, don't rush. Take enough time to do a thorough job.
  • Use the proper equipment. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, especially if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.
  • Practice good technique. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle against your teeth and brush with short back-and-forth motions. Remember to brush the inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue. Avoid vigorous or harsh scrubbing, which can irritate your gums.
  • Know when to replace your toothbrush. Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Flossing for oral health

You can't reach the tight spaces between your teeth or under your gumline with a toothbrush. That's why daily flossing is important. When you floss:

  • Don't skimp. Break off about 18 inches of dental floss. Wind most of the floss around the middle finger on one hand, and the rest around the middle finger on the other hand — leaving about 1 inch to floss your first tooth.
  • Take it one tooth at a time. Use your thumbs and forefingers to gently pull the floss from the gumline to the top of the tooth to scrape off plaque. Rub the floss against all sides of the tooth. Unwind to fresh floss as you progress to the next tooth.
  • Keep it up. If you have trouble getting floss through your teeth, try the waxed variety. If it's hard to manipulate the floss, use a floss holder or an interdental cleaner — such as a dental pick or stick designed to clean between the teeth.

Other oral health care tips

In addition to daily brushing and flossing, you might use an antimicrobial or antiseptic mouth rinse to help reduce plaque between your teeth.

To remove food particles from your teeth, you might try an oral irrigator — a device that aims a stream of water at your teeth. Resist the temptation to use toothpicks or other objects that could injure your gums. Keep in mind, however, an oral irrigator doesn't replace daily brushing and flossing.

Oral health problems to report to your dentist

To prevent gum disease and other oral health problems, schedule regular dental cleanings and exams — generally at least once or twice a year. In the meantime, contact your dentist if you notice any signs or symptoms that may suggest oral health problems, such as:

  • Red, tender or swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Gums that begin pulling away from your teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in the way your top and bottom teeth align with each other
  • Unusual sensitivity to hot and cold

Early detection and treatment of oral health problems can ensure a lifetime of good oral health.

10 Tips for Getting Good Sleep

There’s a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep -- and it's very important. We quickly adjust to being sleep-deprived, and don't notice that we aren't functioning at a normal level, but lack of sleep really affects us. If you're feeling blue or listless, try going to sleep thirty minutes earlier for a week. It can really help.

Here are tips that have helped me get good sleep:

Good habits for good sleep:

1. Exercise most days, even if it’s just to take a walk.

2. No caffeine after 6:00 p.m.

3. An hour before bedtime, avoid doing any kind of work that takes alert thinking. Addressing envelopes—okay. Analyzing an article—nope.

4. Adjust your bedroom temperature to be slightly chilly.

5. Keep your bedroom dark. Studies show that even the tiny light from a digital alarm clock can disrupt a sleep cycle. We have about six devices in our room that glow bright green; it’s like sleeping in a mad scientist’s lab. I have to put a pillow over the cable box.

6. Keep the bedroom as tidy as possible. It’s not restful to fight through chaos into bed.

If sleep won’t come:
7. Breathe deeply and slowly until you can’t stand it anymore.

8. If your mind is racing (you’re planning a trip, a move; you’re worried about a medical diagnosis), write down what’s on your mind. This technique really works for me.

9. Slather yourself with body lotion. This feels good and also, if you’re having trouble sleeping because you’re hot, it cools you down.

10. If your feet are cold, put on socks.

Five Malaysian Institutions Among Top 100 Asian Universities

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) -- University of Malaya (UM) led four other Malaysian universities into the Top 100 Asian Universities list, the first regional ranking issued by The Times Higher Education (THE)-Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

UM clinched 39th spot while four other universities on the list were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (51st), Universiti Sains Malaysia (69th), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (82nd) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (90th).

Managing Director of QS Nunzio Quacquarelli said the result of the QS.com Asian University Rankings was based on regionally relevant measures of excellence.

"The top performing universities were distinguished not only by quality, but also by high productivity of research, compared to their regional peers," he said in a statement here, today.

He said Malaysian universities had performed well, with high numbers of international students and faculties, which made Malaysia an attractive option for international students.

Meanwhile, three Hong Kong universities clinched the top five spots with University of Hong Kong taking up the number one spot, followed by Chinese University of Hong Kong (2nd) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (4th).

Japan's University of Tokyo and Kyoto University were ranked third and fifth respectively.

Apa dah nak jadi ni...

Telan pil perancang jadi wanita

KUALA LUMPUR 14 Jun – Obses untuk menjadi ‘wanita’, golongan lelaki lembut dan mak nyah kini cenderung makan pil pencegah hamil kerana terpengaruh dengan dakwaan kononnya ia boleh merealisasikan impian mereka menjadi wanita.

Mereka beranggapan, amalan pil perancang boleh merubah tubuh menjadi seperti ‘wanita’. Payu dara membesar umpama gadis.

'Ayah saya diseksa sebelum disembelih'

World Environment Day | 5th of June

Your Planet Needs You! Unite to Combat Climate Change on World Environment Day

On the 5th of June Scouts will join in the annual celebrations of World Environment Day, participating in environmental education activities, tree planting projects and community celebrations throughout the world. Scouts are an official partner with the United Nations Environment Programme to celebrate this day, with Luc Panissod, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, calling on our members to share their activities with the UNEP World Environment Day website. "World Scouting calls all young people, Scouts and non-Scouts, to engage with UNEP on the occasion of World Environment Day. Raising awareness on climate change and working towards achieving better living conditions has increased Scouting's commitment to addressing environmental issues. Youth empowerment is an integral part of World Scouting policy to invite young people to become agents of change"

Already, the World Organization of the Scout Movement have pledged their participation in the global tree planting drive of the Billion Tree Campaign and World Environment Day. Priority countries for tree planting activities by Scouts include Mexico, India, South Africa, Georgia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Hungary, Philippines, Brazil and Australia. Through this initiative the Scouts hope to plant 65,000 trees or more.

Mexico is the official host country for the United Nations World Environment Day (WED) 2009 celebrations and the Scout Association of Mexico are coordinating many activities, workshops and tree planting projects for this event. This will be accompanied by hundreds of other environment initiatives throughout the world to make this a truly global event.

The theme for WED 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You! Unite to Combat Climate Change.' It reflects the urgency for nations to ‘seal the deal’ at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year. It also raises a call for everyone to get involved, rethink actions and ways that result in wastage and heavy greenhouse gas emissions, and adopt a greener lifestyle. There are a number of easy-to-use campaign materials which can be downloaded on the website at http://www.unep.org/wed/2009/english/content/downloads.asp.

These include the WED logo, posters and several flash animations including a new feature, the Daily do something Tips. These are useful ideas on how to easily green your daily routine, and promotional materials that you can use on your website or through other publications.

Further, UNEP have started a global online tree-planting campaign for WED on Twitter. UNEP has pledged to plant 100,000 trees for 100,000 followers --or one for every follower if they can achieve more than 100,000-- by World Environment Day, 5 June. This effort supports the Billion Tree Campaign’s goal to plant a total of seven billion trees- one for every person on the planet- by year’s end. UNEP ask that supporters start following at www.twitter.com/UNEPandYou. Add your voice and twitter loudly!

TERENGGANU: BUMBUNG STADIUM SULTAN MIZAN RUNTUH!!!
